Understanding The Concept Of A Plant-Based Diet

A plant-based diet is not just one trend or style of nutritional eating. It combines many forms that people can choose from. Most vegetarians eat what is called a Lacto-Ovo diet – a diet that contains dairy, eggs, honey apart from veggies, nuts, beans, soy, and other non-animal based products. Some other plant-based meals include meats and fishes. The addition of fish leads to what is called the pescatarian diet – same as the Lacto-Ovo vegetarian diet, but with the addition of fish. There are Flexitarian diets, which include a heavy weightage on plants and leafy greens and light on meats and other animal products.

When the meat is canceled out entirely, along with all other animal products like honey, dairy, and eggs, etc. then it gives rise to a vegan diet. If the diet only contains raw plant products, then this is a step further and is called a raw vegan diet. Most of you, who are reading into plant-based diets and thinking of beginning it needn’t start with the extreme. You can slowly and gradually shift from one nutritional style to ones that contain less meat and animal products. There is the Mediterranean diet as well, which is technically plant-based and is regarded as a healthy way of eating.

The Need To Switch

The studies that link diets with low meat content and higher lifespans are many. The reason is because of the lowered risk of heart diseases, due to lower body weight and subsequently a lower body weight and fat percentage. The chances of contracting diabetes, cancer, and some other fatal diseases are also lower when you switch over to a predominantly plant-based diet. The strain on the body is lower, and in certain situations has also helped in controlling rheumatoid arthritis.
